Alan Reed Art

Alan Reed

Artist Alan Reed, from Northumberland is one of Britain’s leading watercolourists, he was born into a family with a history of painting, and fell in love with watercolours at the age of 15. His father Kenneth Reed is the world’s leading Golf artist and Alan’s grandfather and great-grandfather were both artists.

Alan trained as an illustrator / graphic designer in the North of England and spent the early part of his career doing artist impressions of new building projects for architects.

Over the last 35 years Alan has developed his own distinctive painting style that is instantly recognisable. His specialisms include portraits, landscapes, cityscapes and seascapes in both watercolour and oil paints. Alan's unique, fluid style captures the atmosphere of different settings from the drama of city life to the serenity and beauty of a rural landscape.

I produce paintings which are representational but not photographic. I am concerned about capturing the light and the fleeting moment for which watercolour is ideally suited. I like to paint beach scenes, people and cities, particularly the hustle and bustle of street life. I prefere to paint portraits in oil and from life. Typically, a portrait is painted over several sittings”.

Alan has had many successful exhibitions both in the UK and abroad since 1981, including those at the Mall Galleries in London, Malcolm Innes Gallery in Edinburgh, Italy, the USA and the Middle East and has been a regular exhibitor of rowing scenes in the Stewards’ Enclosure at the Henley Royal Regatta.

The quality of his work received national recognition with the selection of a number of his cityscapes in the Sunday Times watercolour competition for three successive years.  Alan came first runner up in the Bath Prize 2010 with his watercolour painting of The Royal Crescent and winner of the Circus Prize in the same competition in 2011.

Alan's approach to painting is described in a book entitled "Landscapes in Watercolour" by Theodora Philcox, an inspirational book which features the work of 23 leading watercolourists from around the world.

His work is sort after by private collectors, galleries, corporate companies and interior designers both nationally and internationally.
